CTS Intercooler Bench Cooling Test

CTS Intercooler Bench Cooling Test

Background:

Bench testing intercoolers is the first cooling efficiency evaluation conducted to gauge if a product performs well enough to invest the time and effort installing the IC on the GTI for further evaluation.

The CTS stock location intercooler has been flow tested and is now subject of a bench cooling test.

Test Procedure:

The test follows the procedure used to test a number of stock location intercoolers. The IC has hot air flowed through the interior passages for two minutes, after which time cooling airflow is passed through the exterior fins. After an additional minute the heated air is removed and ambient air is drawn through the interior.

The outlet air temperature is recorded periodically throughout the test.

Test Results:

The CTS IC is compared to the stock GTI IC in the following chart:

Next the CTS IC is compared with the other stock location intercoolers that have been tested following this procedure:

CTS Intercooler vs Others – Bench Cooling Test

In the last comparison the time scale ends when the heat is removed and the stock IC and 1stracinguk ICs are omitted to make the chart easier to interpret:

CTS Intercooler vs Others - Initial 3 minutes
CTS Intercooler vs Others – Initial 3 minutes

Conclusions:

The CTS stock location intercooler performs similar to other Bar and Plate design stock location intercoolers of comparable size.
