Treadstone TR8-24C Bicooler Test

Background:

Before swapping the AMS IC for the Integrated Engineering V1, I installed a Treadstone TR8-24C front mount to see how this high-flowing FMIC would perform in a bicooler configuration.

TR8-24C Installation:

Since the front of the car was going to be taken apart after the test to install the AMS IC, I didn’t make an effort to permanently mount the Treadstone, only holding it in place with straps

The TR8-24C has large openings to the end tanks, which require a larger silicone connector than the bicooler hoses. I needed to trim the ends of the bicooler hoses and attach a reducer coupler to them.

With the intercooler setup complete, I was ready to reinstall the bumper cover and record the intake air temperatures.

Test Setup:

The GTI is currently outfitted with a Shuenk IS48 turbocharger operating on a Russell Road and Racing 93 octane tune.

For this data collection session, I operated the GTI in 3rd gear and conducted a series of single-gear pulls starting from around 2,000 RPM and letting off the accelerator around 6,500 RPM.

Results:

An overview of the intake air temperature (IAT) and ambient air temperature (OAT) during the session is shown below.

The first nine of the total fifteen pulls are shown on the chart below.

The next chart shows the difference between the IAT and ambient temperature at 6,000 RPM for all of the pulls.

Interestingly, during the second half of the session, the IAT delta trends downward as enough seconds pass between pulls, allowing the IC setup to eliminate stored heat and perform better during the subsequent pull.

Conclusion:

The Treadstone TR8-24C intercooler was installed on a Mk7 GTI to be used in conjunction with an Integrated Engineering V1 stock location intercooler in a bicooler configuration.

The combination worked well with the GTI’s IS48 turbocharger, keeping the maximum temperature increase at or below 20°F over a series of fifteen full-throttle pulls.
