SimosTools Stage 0.5 TCU Tune

Introduction:

Objectives:

Learning objective statements (behavior, condition, and standard) are set in the context of the learning event and the content.

Intent – “What do I want the learner to do?” The answer to this question determines the verb domain and category.

Intent is determined by the performance gap as well as the audience characteristics.

In order to formulate a learning objective statement, the learning objective outcome is selected first.

Behavior

What behavior can the learner demonstrate or what evidence can be provided to indicate that the learner has mastered the required knowledge or skills specified in the instruction?

Condition

The condition describes the tools or information that the learner will be given in order to demonstrate completion.

The characteristics of any resource material required to perform the task

SimosTools allows for DIY software modification to the Mk7 ECU and TCU tunes. This page explains the steps for making a few easy changes to the ECU and TCU tunes. It walks through an example of customizing the shift points of a TCU tune and illustrates a minor change to the throttle response of an ECU tune.

The description of the tune as “Stage 0.5” conveys that the tunes involve minor changes that keep the vehicle operating within the limits assigned by Volkswagen.

Aftermarket tunes usually increase settings beyond what VW assigned. For instance, an aftermarket tune may increase boost pressure or raise the transmission’s clamping pressure. No changes of those types will be made in these examples. These examples only address modifying the transmission shift points and the throttle response to pedal input. More on this later.

Motivation:

I have spent years customizing my DSG tune. Initially, this was accomplished by purchasing different tunes and finding one I preferred. Next, I worked with tuners to revise their tunes with the changes I wanted, but this was inefficient and burdensome for the tuners. The introduction of HP Tuners software opened the door to more detailed changes and rapid feedback. SimosTools has a much lower cost for customizing the ECU and TCU tunes, and this page is meant to help others interested in learning how SimosTools can be used to customize their car’s software to their liking.

For those with a DSG-equipped stock GTI, I believe changing the DSG shift points is the most substantial change that can be made to increase the enjoyment of driving the car. The steps below show how to do this without changing the vehicle’s “safety.”

What is tuning?

How is the software used?

What are the outcomes?

Changes made within limits set by VW.

TCU Tune:

Change to the TCU tune comprises changing the D mode upshift points, downshift points, and the scale of the pedal input table.
